Hair Loss and Balding

At HeadQuarters we see all types of hair loss in men and women. Most people have some common questions that we have answered here for you.

  1. There are approximately 100,000 individual hairs on your head, and only after half of them are gone does it become noticeable.

  2. Losing some hair each day is normal. You may lose 80 to 100 hairs each day. The key is that normally these hairs grow back. It's when this stops that it becomes a problem.

  3. Hair loss may be associated with stress, and also can be caused by hormonal problems. An over or under active thyroid gland can cause hair loss.

  4. Hair loss can occur after childbirth. During pregnancy hairs that should have been shed may remain, only to fall out for a period up to 3 months after birth.

  5. Hair loss can be caused by certain medicines and prescriptions. Blood thinner (anticoagulants), gout medicines, chemotherapy, large amounts of Vitamin A, Birth control pills and antidepressants have all been linked to hair loss – although it varies for the individual. Please consult your physician if you have any concerns about your prescription medicines.

  6. Hair loss can be caused by fungal infections of the scalp and can be treated.

  7. Hair loss can occur when hair is styled in tight or knotted ways such as pigtails, cornrows, rollers or even from the chemicals involved in perms.

  8. Alopecia areata has been linked to the person's own immune system. This autoimmune disease starts as a small round area and can grow to much larger sizes. This hair sometimes grows back within a year, but the patient will often experience cycles of falling out and growth.

  9. Poor nutrition can cause hair loss. Anorexia or bulimia causes hair loss because the individual is not getting the food nutrition they need for healthy hair growth.

  10. Genetic factors (or a combination of genetic and other factors) may also cause hair loss. This can start from the mid-teen years and is common with steroid use.

  11. You and your hair can benefit from a balanced healthy diet.

  12. For some, the use of baby shampoo may be recommended (and sometimes no more than once per day).

  13. Avoid rubbing your hair too vigorously with your towel when you are drying it; or avoid high heat settings on your hair dryer.

  14. Style your hair once it is dry or slightly damp. Wet styling causes stretching of the hair and often the follicle will break.

  15. If you are experiencing hair loss, avoid the use of chemicals.
